Cluj Philosophy Festival, 3rd Edition, October 14–19, 2026

When the festival organizers chose the question “What do we still have in common?” as the theme for this year’s edition, they did not conceive of it in a nostalgic sense—as if we once shared a great deal, only to be left with little today. They did not intend to suggest that we shared so much in the past and that the present has become impoverished.

The question is oriented toward the future, taking as its starting point the current experience of a “tragedy of the non-common,” as some authors term it. We begin with observations that are simple and accessible to everyone: collective action has become increasingly difficult to realize as we witness a world dominated by arbitrary powers and the operations of massive global economic groups; as citizens’ political engagement wanes and democracies weaken; and as the social fabric erodes, making way for forms of discourse and action that are fusionist, communitarian, and exclusionary—such as nationalism, xenophobia, racism, identity- and security-based paranoia, and discrimination against various types of minorities.
